An unusually bright vintage Serkhat Baluch kilim from Afghanistan. Kilims from this region are typically characterised by darker tones and a more restrained colour palette, making this piece especially distinctive. Its composition is formed by bands of varying widths, each richly decorated with intricate small-scale motifs that create a highly detailed design.
Serkhat Baluch kilims are renowned for their exceptionally fine weave, crafted using soft Ghilzai wool. The wefts are densely compacted and firmly beaten down on the loom, resulting in a textile that is remarkably heavy, durable, and hard-wearing. This kilim is well suited to areas of heavy foot traffic and is built to last for decades to come.
The weft is woven from sheep’s wool, while the warp — visible in the fringes — is made from goat hair, a traditional construction method in tribal areas.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool and goat hair
Size: 298×95 cms
Origin: Baluch tribe from Afghanistan
Date of weaving: 1970
