Playful Vintage Qashqai Kilim with Fiery Red Background
This vibrant vintage Qashqai kilim bursts with personality, thanks to its bold, fiery red background and the weaver’s playful, improvisational style. Rather than following strict symmetry, the artisan embraced creative freedom — you can see it in the spontaneous arrangement of motifs, the varying sizes and scales of the medallions, and the diverse, seemingly random color choices throughout the piece.
The background showcases a beautiful abrash — those subtle shifts in tone that occur naturally in hand-dyed wool — adding depth and movement to the design.
For a charming tribal touch, take a look at the upper left corner: a small figure appears, possibly a human form. What do you think?
Woven with fine craftsmanship, this kilim features top-quality wool with a soft, lustrous finish. A true celebration of artistic freedom and traditional skill.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool
Size: 186×127 cms
Origin: Qashqai tribe, Iran
Date of weaving: 1970s
Turkic-speaking pastoral nomadic tribal groups began entering central and southern Iran during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Qashqai, as a large tribal unit, dates back at least to the early eighteenth century, when some Turkish(Turki)-speaking tribal groups in the region existed under the name Qashqai.
Qashqai kilims are best known for their boldness and freedom in the way the pattern is drawn. An aesthetically pleasing geometry, the fineness of their wool and their clear, strong colours combine to ensure their reputation as superlative examples.
