A finely woven semi-antique Qashqai rug from Iran, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship and a high knot density that creates a dense, durable pile with remarkable detail. The main field features three large medallions, each depicting charming scenes of small goats. Surrounding these are an abundance of decorative elements, including flowers, shrubs, elegant palmettes, boteh motifs, as well as additional goats and birds.
The four blue corner spandrels echo the field’s motifs, with birds rendered in a more naturalistic style, even including peacocks.
Tightly woven and highly resilient, this rug is well-suited for high-traffic areas and is built to last for decades.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool
Size: 198×114 cms
Origin: Qashqai tribe, Iran
Date of weaving: 1950s
Turkic-speaking pastoral nomadic tribal groups began entering central and southern Iran during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Qashqai, as a large tribal unit, dates back at least to the early eighteenth century, when some Turkish(Turki)-speaking tribal groups in the region existed under the name Qashqai.
Qashqai kilims are best known for their boldness and freedom in the way the pattern is drawn. An aesthetically pleasing geometry, the fineness of their wool and their clear, strong colours combine to ensure their reputation as superlative examples.
