A semi-antique Qashqai palas kilim from Iran with an undyed ivory wool background.
The simplicity of this palas kilim is enhanced by the use of a few colours, mainly blue stripes. On the plain white field, the weaver has embroidered lozenges. The weaver had access only to a small loom and, to achieve the required width, she wove two long kilims and later joined them. In this piece, rustic simplicity and elegance are combined. All dyes are natural.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool
Size: 177×154 cms
Origin: Qashqai tribe, Iran
Date of weaving: 1950s
This kilim is a “palas”, a type of kilim woven to be used as a basis for domestic activities within the nomadic community (drying vegetables, making cheese, etc.). This vintage kilim was hand-woven by a nomadic or village woman, using her own wool spun and carded by hand.
