This semi-antique Baluch kilim runner was originally woven as a tribal storage bag, later opened out and repurposed into a narrow runner. In its original form, the piece would have been stitched along the sides to create a functional sack, with the more richly decorated and darker woven section forming the front, while the plainer, less decorated half served as the back.
It is particularly interesting that the weaver chose to use largely undyed, naturally coloured wool throughout the majority of the weaving. The design itself is highly detailed and intricate, reflecting traditional Baluch weaving techniques.
At either end, small loops made from goat hair can still be seen. These would originally have been used to fasten and close the bag when it was filled. This piece is in mint condition, never used.
