An antique Baluch kilim with a superb palette of natural colours, including a deep green used across a large proportion of the piece—a feature rarely seen in antique Baluch rugs or kilims.
The kilim is very tightly woven, with a design arranged horizontally in bands. Its most striking feature is the contrast between large-scale chevron motifs, combined with solid blocks of colour, and other bands where the motifs are much smaller and more intricately detailed.
This kilim must have been a treasured possession for its owner. The quality of the wool, the tightness of the weave, the richness of the dyes, and the attention paid to even the smallest details all speak to the care invested in its creation.
This exceptional attention to detail is evident even in the side cords, where the weaver has incorporated elaborate, colourful details, adding yet another layer of artistry to an already remarkable piece.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool
Size: 186×121 cms
Origin: Baluch tribe from Afghanistan
Date of weaving: 1940s
