2025 Sustainable Business Award by the Chamber of Commerce

2025 Sustainable Business Award by the Chamber of Commerce
Nómada began its journey in 1997 in Glasgow, Scotland, founded by Nerea Aguirre as a result of her passion for Central Asia and the Middle East. In 2001, Nerea and her husband, Alistair Baird, returned to Donostia, Nerea’s hometown, and the Nómada project began, currently employing four people.

Nómada represents a completely different concept of a rug store, combining the ancient art of rugs and kilims with the latest technological and design tools, always keeping in mind the social and cultural aspects, both in the producing countries and in Gipuzkoa. In their 150-square-meter shop, Nómada understands innovation as staying one step ahead and anticipating — or even creating — trends in a commercial sector that has traditionally been very static. Nómada has more than 1,000 different references on its website; around 80% of its sales come from customers outside Gipuzkoa and Spain, reaching 50 countries across five continents.

Sustainability — both social and environmental — runs transversally through all of its projects. For this reason, on the one hand, they purchase vintage and antique rugs, and on the other, they produce rugs with modern and innovative designs, woven mainly in fair-trade workshops in Turkey and Nepal. It is this sustainable philosophy that drives them to move forward and open their doors every day with a smile.

Nómada thus presents a sustainable business model in every sense: highlighting its social commitment to disadvantaged groups at risk of exclusion, to whom they offer opportunities for the future; its environmental commitment, using biodegradable materials, reusing, restoring, and creating new products from generated waste; and its efforts to raise awareness and educate its customers from both social and environmental perspectives. At the same time, it remains an innovative business, adapted to the market, having incorporated digital tools into both management and product sales, while maintaining constant creative work in line with market trends and evolution.

THE WORKSHOP IN NEPAL DURING CORONAVIRUS

Nepal has been house confined for 11 days now. A few days before the lock-up, some women who have the loom at home, took some wool to be able to carry on working from home.

HOW TO WASH YOUR FAVORITE RUG

Your rug or kilim is a few years old now and you have never washed it? Are you afraid of doing it? In this blog we will explain to you how to do it easily, based on how we saw they do it in Iran and Turkey (they have already done it for centuries).

ELKANO RUG TO CELEBRATE THE 500TH ANIVERSARY OF THE FIRST CIRCUMNAVIGATION OF EARTH

To commemorate the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the world by the Basque sailor Juan Sebastián Elcano, we designed a rug called “Elkano”, which has been woven in a Fair Trade Workshop in Nepal. We have chosen to represent this historic event with a contemporary design.

TRIP TO IRAN!

We just came back from an amazing trip to Iran where we bought wonderful antique rugs, kilims and tribal items from the nomadic way of life. We also purchased contemporary gabbeh rugs. We bought the pieces mainly in the baazars, but also in the most unexpected places like in a restaurant, in homes, and in a pistacho and potatoes warehouse…They are all sooooo beautiful!

Hope you like our rugs as much as we do!

TRIP TO NEPAL!

Just arrived from Nepal I write this BLOG still with jet Lag… I visitted the Fair Trade workshop we work with since 2005. Each season Alistair designs new models, we send them to Nepal, and voilá!, in about 4-6 months we have them in the shop.

All the wool we use is from the Hilamayan high plateau, hand spun so it retains the lanoline and all its natural properties. And of course, the knotting of the rugs is also by hand.

TELESKOPIOA EXHIBITION

To celebrate that Donostia-San Sebastián is the 2016 European City of Culture we have prepared an exhibition, “Teleskopioa”, which reproduces, in rug format, images from the Hubble telescope of NASA. These are spectacular, often abstract, images, showing our planet, stars and supernovae.
The idea behind the “Teleskopioa” collection is that we would like people to reflect on the beauty of our temporary “home” – the planet earth and the space.

Visit to Alpujarra

In Mairena, Alpujarra in Granada, with Lola, from a family of weavers for many generations. Very kindly she showed us the family looms and she shared very useful información about the weaving traditions in this area of southern Spain. The tradition goes back to when the Arabs were in Spain (711-1492).
