A charming semi-antique kilim from Elbeyli, Turkey, rich in history and craftsmanship. In the upper cartouche, the weaver inscribed names and a date, suggesting that it was likely created as part of a dowry. The first word appears to be “Sultan,” a name with strong cultural significance. Historically, sultan was a royal title used for rulers of the Ottoman Empire, but in Turkish naming traditions it has also been used in female names, often combined with another element (for example, Ayşe Sultan or Hürrem Sultan). The second part of the name remains illegible, as does the final section, which appears to contain numbers.
The design is arranged in striking horizontal bands and features classic Elbeyli motifs: hourglass forms that may also be interpreted as a double prayer niche (saf).
Finely woven with soft, lustrous wool and embellished with additional motifs in the cicim technique, this kilim is both a visually captivating textile and a fragment of cultural heritage.
