A superb antique Qashqai kilim showcasing a rich palette of natural colors. The background is dyed in what Persian weavers once called copper colour—a warm terracotta shade traditionally achieved with natural dyes. Upon this ground, classic Qashqai motifs are arranged in an unusually distinctive layout, giving the piece a rare character.
The borders deserve special mention: a striking combination of deep indigo blue and mustard yellow. White areas are primarily undyed wool, with some cotton highlights. Also note the use of eight point stars in the border.
Remarkably, aside from a small repair on the border, the kilim has survived in mint condition. Even the fringes remain intact and original, a testament to the care and appreciation it received from its first owner through to its more recent custodians.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool
Size: 270×160 cms
Origin: Qashqai tribe, Iran
Date of weaving: 1940s
Turkic-speaking pastoral nomadic tribal groups began entering central and southern Iran during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Qashqai, as a large tribal unit, dates back at least to the early eighteenth century, when some Turkish(Turki)-speaking tribal groups in the region existed under the name Qashqai.
Qashqai kilims are best known for their boldness and freedom in the way the pattern is drawn. An aesthetically pleasing geometry, the fineness of their wool and their clear, strong colours combine to ensure their reputation as superlative examples.
