I’ve written countless descriptions of kilims and rugs, but every now and then I come across a piece so unusual it leaves me almost speechless. This charming kilim is one of those rare finds.
It belongs to the palas (or pelas) type, yet it stands out thanks to its decoration: motifs created using knotted, carpet-like techniques in vibrant fluorescent colors. These flashy synthetic hues create a striking contrast against the natural, undyed wool background.
The weaver clearly had a fondness for square and squarish shapes, which dominate both the central field and the borders. But the most delightful detail lies in the bottom right corner—a little Qashqai nomadic girl, woven in a three-dimensional style, her braided hair literally standing out from the surface of the kilim.
We may never know what the weaver was thinking, but it feels possible this playful, imaginative piece was created with her daughter—or another child—in mind.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool and some synthetic
Size: 260×178 cms
Origin: Qashqai tribe, Iran
Date of weaving: 1980s
Turkic-speaking pastoral nomadic tribal groups began entering central and southern Iran during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Qashqai, as a large tribal unit, dates back at least to the early eighteenth century, when some Turkish(Turki)-speaking tribal groups in the region existed under the name Qashqai.
Qashqai kilims are best known for their boldness and freedom in the way the pattern is drawn. An aesthetically pleasing geometry, the fineness of their wool and their clear, strong colours combine to ensure their reputation as superlative examples.
