Exquisite Antique Luri Saddlebag (Khorjin)
Discover this beautiful antique Luri saddlebag, or khorjin, a truly captivating piece. The main medallion boldly fills the entire front surface, featuring a pile that is wonderfully soft, plush, and long.
While many saddlebags typically showcase a predominantly red palette, this khorjin stands out with a striking deep indigo blue dominating its four spandrels. A particularly intriguing detail is the tiny outer border, filled with small squares that echo patterns found in antique Gabbeh rugs.
The reverse of the saddlebag features a design woven with horizontal motifs using the complementary weft weave technique. Throughout the entire piece, natural dyes create rich colours with the extensive use of that deep indigo blue notable on both the front and back.
This saddlebag is in excellent condition for its age, though there are some minor repairs on the back, visible in the accompanying pictures.

There is also a significant population of Lurs in eastern and central parts of Iraq The word Luristan or Lorestan, is attributed to the areas inhabited by the Lurs. The boundaries of Luristan stretch from the eastern Iraqi plains to the west and southwest of Iran. Today, Lorestan is the name of one of the western provinces of Iran. Luristan´s rugged terrain, which still bars easy access from Iraq, favored integrity of style. The Luri wool tends to be soft and shinny.
