Bright and Playful Vintage Qashqai Kilim
This vibrant vintage Qashqai kilim is a joyful celebration of color and creativity. The design is arranged in pairs of bold medallions, each in a different hue, with smaller, simplified medallions filling the spaces in between. Each shape carries a charming irregularity — perhaps the weaver was still learning her craft, or perhaps she simply embraced the beauty of improvisation and asymmetry. We’ll never know, but the result is full of character and warmth.
The two borders mirror the medallion palette in a chevron-like pattern, tying the composition together with rhythm and movement. Subtle abrash (variations of color within the same tone) add depth and life to the piece, revealing the natural beauty of the hand-dyed wool.
Woven with fine wool, this kilim is a true burst of energy — a cheerful, one-of-a-kind piece that’s sure to brighten even the darkest of days.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool
Size: 247×152 cms
Origin: Qashqai tribe, Iran
Date of weaving: 1990s
Turkic-speaking pastoral nomadic tribal groups began entering central and southern Iran during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Qashqai, as a large tribal unit, dates back at least to the early eighteenth century, when some Turkish(Turki)-speaking tribal groups in the region existed under the name Qashqai.
Qashqai kilims are best known for their boldness and freedom in the way the pattern is drawn. An aesthetically pleasing geometry, the fineness of their wool and their clear, strong colours combine to ensure their reputation as superlative examples.
