Bright and Cheerful Vintage Qashqai Kilim
This Qashqai kilim features a plain red main field, enriched by a lovely abrash—subtle variations within the red that add depth and vibrancy. Three large medallions appear to float across the field; while they share the same pattern, each medallion is rendered in different colors.
The multiple borders echo the colors of the central field, unifying the design. Notably, the weaver miscalculated the space in the upper-left corner, ingeniously devising a unique solution that adds character to the piece. The use of pink is rarely seen in Qashqai kilims.
Woven in finely spun wool, this kilim showcases both the skill of its maker and the rich tradition of Qashqai weaving.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool
Size: 233×153 cms
Origin: Qashqai tribe, Iran
Date of weaving: 1980s
Turkic-speaking pastoral nomadic tribal groups began entering central and southern Iran during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Qashqai, as a large tribal unit, dates back at least to the early eighteenth century, when some Turkish(Turki)-speaking tribal groups in the region existed under the name Qashqai.
Qashqai kilims are best known for their boldness and freedom in the way the pattern is drawn. An aesthetically pleasing geometry, the fineness of their wool and their clear, strong colours combine to ensure their reputation as superlative examples.
