A vintage Qashqai kilim with an original field decorated with small three-colour pinnacles arranged in horizontal rows.
A particularly charming detail appears near the borders. When the motifs reached the edges, the weaver found herself with a small amount of space left. To solve this, she added tiny triangles that echo the main pinnacle motif from the field, but wove them in a more elongated shape so they would fit the remaining space. As there was not enough room to include all three colours, she often used only the outer colour of the pinnacle, while at other times she selected a colour at random, creating a lively and spontaneous composition.
Some of the colours come from undyed natural wool, including the brown and ivory tones.
The warp is made of goat’s hair, visible in the fringes. The kilim shows some small repairs consistent with age.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool and goat hair for warps
Size: 217×129 cms
Origin: Qashqai tribe, Iran
Date of weaving: 1970s
Turkic-speaking pastoral nomadic tribal groups began entering central and southern Iran during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Qashqai, as a large tribal unit, dates back at least to the early eighteenth century, when some Turkish(Turki)-speaking tribal groups in the region existed under the name Qashqai.
Qashqai kilims are best known for their boldness and freedom in the way the pattern is drawn. An aesthetically pleasing geometry, the fineness of their wool and their clear, strong colours combine to ensure their reputation as superlative examples.
