Vintage Esme Kilim – Tree of Life with Birds and Symbolic Border
This vintage Esme kilim showcases a central Tree of Life design, with two large birds flanking the base. The tree’s leaves are woven with what resembles bird wings, creating a unique and meaningful detail.
While the tree appears symmetrical at first glance, the weaver has introduced randomly arranged colors to break the symmetry, adding movement and a natural feel to the design.
The border features an interesting motif, possibly an elibelinde or Mother Goddess symbol, known for its associations with fertility and protection.
The kilim also presents a subtle abrash effect in the main grey/blue field, where natural color changes in the wool create a dynamic, layered look.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool
Size: 175×105 cms
Origin: Esme, Turkey
Date of weaving: 1980s
The coloring of Esme kilims is similar to that of Denizli, but a little softer: red and pink, purple and blue that fade to grey, as well as black orange and some yellow. Both use slitweave, with médium-to fine-spun wool and often cotton is used for the warps. Esme kilims have detailed design and a fine quality of weaving.
