Charming 1940s Qashqai Kilim with Natural Tones and Subtle Motifs
This lovely Qashqai kilim from the 1940s was handwoven in Iran using alternating horizontal bands of undyed wool and naturally dyed wool. Some bands have been intentionally left plain, while others are adorned with small, decorative motifs. The placement of these bands appears delightfully spontaneous, following no fixed sequence—adding to the kilim’s character and authenticity.
With its soft, neutral palette achieved with naturak dyes, punctuated by subtle touches of color, this piece is easy to style and fits beautifully in a variety of spaces. Its convenient, almost square format makes it a versatile addition to any room.

Turkic-speaking pastoral nomadic tribal groups began entering central and southern Iran during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Qashqai, as a large tribal unit, dates back at least to the early eighteenth century, when some Turkish(Turki)-speaking tribal groups in the region existed under the name Qashqai.
Qashqai kilims are best known for their boldness and freedom in the way the pattern is drawn. An aesthetically pleasing geometry, the fineness of their wool and their clear, strong colours combine to ensure their reputation as superlative examples.
