Semi-Antique Qashqai Kilim – Strong Geometry and Tribal Character
This semi-antique Qashqai kilim features a very strong and graphic pattern that immediately draws attention. The composition begins with a small central white rhombus, which gradually expands outward in a structured, rhythmic formation. This arrangement is built from concentric rows of lozenges, alternating between plain rhombs and others filled with traditional Qashqai motifs.
The interplay of these alternating elements creates a bold sense of movement and structure. When viewed from a distance, the entire sequence of lozenges forms a larger medallion shape—a striking visual centerpiece that gives the kilim its bold, geometric character.
The colour palette is vibrant and varied, achieved through a combination of natural and chemical dyes.
Woven with durable materials and strong technique, this is a robust kilim—well-suited for everyday use and ideal for areas with high foot traffic. A fine example of tribal craftsmanship that blends functionality with a commanding visual presence.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool
Size: 276×172 cms
Origin: Qashqai tribe, Iran
Date of weaving: 1960-70s
Turkic-speaking pastoral nomadic tribal groups began entering central and southern Iran during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Qashqai, as a large tribal unit, dates back at least to the early eighteenth century, when some Turkish(Turki)-speaking tribal groups in the region existed under the name Qashqai.
Qashqai kilims are best known for their boldness and freedom in the way the pattern is drawn. An aesthetically pleasing geometry, the fineness of their wool and their clear, strong colours combine to ensure their reputation as superlative examples.
