This highly unusual semi-antique Qashqai kilim from Iran stands out for its distinctive and innovative design. The principal motifs are seamlessly carried into the borders, creating a harmonious and unified composition rarely encountered in traditional examples.
The borders are exceptionally wide and appear only along the longer sides. At the shorter ends, the weaver introduced a striking variation: two narrower borders framing broad plain bands in vibrant orange and green. The minor outer borders, decorated with traditional laleh abbasi motifs, provide a subtle nod to classical Persian design elements.
Woven with extremely finely spun wool, this kilim was clearly intended as a precious and high-quality flatweave. The white areas are executed in undyed cotton, adding textural contrast and refinement. There is a small stain visible in one of the white sections. The dyes used are a combination of natural and early chemical dyes, consistent with its semi-antique origin.
A rare and characterful example of Qashqai weaving, combining tradition with remarkable individuality.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool and cotton in white areas
Size: 200×129 cms
Origin: Qashqai tribe, Iran

Turkic-speaking pastoral nomadic tribal groups began entering central and southern Iran during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Qashqai, as a large tribal unit, dates back at least to the early eighteenth century, when some Turkish(Turki)-speaking tribal groups in the region existed under the name Qashqai.
Qashqai kilims are best known for their boldness and freedom in the way the pattern is drawn. An aesthetically pleasing geometry, the fineness of their wool and their clear, strong colours combine to ensure their reputation as superlative examples.
