Charming Semi-Antique Ordu Kilim – Turkey
This semi-antique Ordu kilim comes from the Black Sea region of Turkey and features the distinctive, nearly square proportions typical of kilims from this area.
Its vibrant, unusually broad borders frame a compact central field, drawing the eye inward. The weaver repeated a single motif throughout the border, but in a wonderfully human detail, misjudged the space — resulting in some motifs being woven only halfway to fit the layout. This charming irregularity adds personality and authenticity to the piece.
In the central field, a single Tree of Life stands tall, its large branches and leaves reaching outward in a bold and symbolic composition. The borders are enriched with beautiful abrash — natural shifts in colour — adding depth and softness to the overall look.

Characteristics of Ordu Kilims
Ordu kilims are hand-woven in the villages surrounding the Ordu region, located in northeastern Anatolia near Turkey’s Black Sea coast. These kilims are known for their bold, graphic designs and rich use of color — often vibrant and inspired by the local landscape and cultural traditions.
One of the most distinctive features of Ordu kilims is their nearly square shape. They typically feature broad, decorative borders that take center stage, often leaving a smaller central field. These strong borders, combined with striking motifs and natural dyes, give Ordu kilims a powerful visual presence and a unique character among Anatolian weavings.
