Qashqai kilim inspired by a vintage kilim
A contemporary Qashqai kilim inspired by a vintage piece we discovered in the bustling bazaar of Shiraz.
We were drawn to the original kilim’s striking design, rich colours, and the beautiful mix of weaving techniques—flatweave combined with knotted (pile) sections. So we collaborated with Qashqai weavers to create a limited number of kilims with a similar character. This piece is the last one left from that production.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool
Size: 181×118 cms
Origin: Qashqai tribe, Iran
Date of weaving: New
Turkic-speaking pastoral nomadic tribal groups began entering central and southern Iran during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Qashqai, as a large tribal unit, dates back at least to the early eighteenth century, when some Turkish(Turki)-speaking tribal groups in the region existed under the name Qashqai.
Qashqai kilims are best known for their boldness and and freedom in the way the pattern is drawn. An aesthetically pleasing geometry, the fineness of their wool and their clear, strong colours combine to ensure their reputation as superlative examples.
The flatwoven sections are simple and geometric, featuring classic chevron and comb motifs. In contrast, the knotted areas bring the piece to life with charming depictions of birds, goats, and trees.
A vibrant, playful kilim full of personality—sure to catch the eye and spark conversation in any space.
