A Collector´s antique Eaj rug from Iran
If you are looking for a rare carpet, look no further. Eaj carpets are uncommon on the market, and when one also features a perfect size, long and intact pile just as it was the day it was woven, along with excellent-quality wool and natural dyes, it is truly an exceptional piece.
The limited, village-type carpet industry of Estahban District is primarily centered in the village of Eaj.
This Eaj carpet is woven with the Shari´atmadari design which has for a long time predominated in the products from this village. Note how the extensive, formal medallion plan of the classical type and all the other design features have been geometrically simplified, summarized and reduced to straight lines; the flower heads turned rectangular, and floral sinuosities replaced by stiff-stemed flowers. Bordered by a magnificient thitherto unmatched and untraced design, coupled with an unusual application of the conventionally primary “stairway” design on the secondary borders-a device never seen before-, it exemplifies a very distictive sub-group of the class. The disciplined yet rhythmic fusion of forms, intensified by a reserved solemn colour scheme, evoques a clear image of great village carpets of the classical period. All the colours in this rug are natural and the pile is full and thick.
