Wow, what a rug!
A finely woven antique Baluch rug dating to around 1900, with an unusually high knot density—particularly remarkable given that Baluch weavers did not often produce rugs of such fine density. The dyes are all natural, including a rare and beautiful emerald green, and the palette offers an exceptional range of colours.
The composition is inspired by Turkmen rug designs. At first glance, the rug appears highly geometric and orderly, but a closer look reveals a wealth of charming nomadic and village motifs, particularly in the spaces between the güls. Here, we find randomly arranged geometric motifs, plants, combs, and even a few little goats!
The rug is in mint condition, retaining its full pile, and even preserves the original kilim ends at both ends. The sides have been reinforced with traditional goat-hair side cords.
A remarkable example of Baluch weaving, combining exceptional fineness with a wonderfully lively and unexpected decorative vocabulary.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool and goat hair for the sidecords
Size: 288×120 cms
Origin: Baluch tribe from Afghanistan
Date of weaving: 1900s
