A charming 1960s Baluch rug that was originally woven as a saddlebag. At some point, the saddlebag was opened out and repurposed as a floor rug, giving this piece a particularly interesting history.
The central medallion is quite unusual, featuring a design that resembles a traditional tilework pattern rather than a conventional rug motif. This gives the composition a distinctive architectural quality.
The weaving is tight and compact, and the rug still retains one of its original kilim finishes at one end, preserving an important detail of its original construction.

The Beluch or Baluch are an Iranian people who live mainly in the Balochistan region, located at the southeasternmost edge of the Iranian plateau, encompassing the countries of Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan. There are also Baloch diaspora communities in neighbouring regions, including in India, Turkmenistan and the Arabian Peninsula.
