A very tightly woven Baluch rug with an unusual navy blue field (and you know how much I love a blue Baluch rug!). Set against this rich blue background are four rectangular cartouches, each divided into four squares. Within each square, the weaver has created a different motif, while the empty spaces around the main designs are filled with small protective symbols believed to ward off the evil eye.
The weaver has carried this same protective motif into the border, creating a harmonious composition and reinforcing the rug’s symbolic character.
The selvages have been reinforced with goat hair, as is traditional in Baluch rugs, adding strength and durability. A finely woven tribal rug, full of character, symbolism, and that wonderfully unusual deep blue with a deep abrash or colour change, that makes it so special.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool
Size: 200×165 cms
Origin: Baluch tribe from Afghanistan
Date of weaving: 1950s
