A Semi-Antique Qashqai Kilim Combining Multiple Weaving Techniques
This semi-antique Qashqai kilim from Iran combines several traditional weaving techniques, including flatweave (kilim), soumak, and knotted pile. The result is a richly textured textile that showcases the technical skill and creativity of its weaver.
Against a plain background of undyed natural wool, the weaver created a lively composition filled with bushes, trees, flowers, and geometric motifs. The variety of techniques adds depth and relief to the design, bringing the landscape-like composition to life.
Along the outer borders, the Qashqai woman added small pompons, a charming detail that enhances the kilim’s handmade character and playful spirit.
Full of energy and colour, this joyful kilim evokes a flourishing garden in springtime. A wonderful piece for bringing warmth, character, and a sense of perpetual spring into the home.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool
Size: 230×172 cms
Origin: Qashqai tribe, Iran

Turkic-speaking pastoral nomadic tribal groups began entering central and southern Iran during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Qashqai, as a large tribal unit, dates back at least to the early eighteenth century, when some Turkish(Turki)-speaking tribal groups in the region existed under the name Qashqai.
Qashqai kilims are best known for their boldness and freedom in the way the pattern is drawn. An aesthetically pleasing geometry, the fineness of their wool and their clear, strong colours combine to ensure their reputation as superlative examples.
