A Minimalist and Elegant Qashqai Palas Kilim
This minimalist and elegant Qashqai Palas kilim is a celebration of simplicity and the natural beauty of wool. Nearly free of decorative motifs, it is woven exclusively from undyed wool in soft beige tones. Rather than relying on ornamentation, the design emerges from subtle abrash—natural variations in the color of the wool—which create gentle shifts in tone and texture across the surface.
The weaver introduced only a few restrained decorative elements: a single vertical stripe at each end of the kilim, woven in undyed brown wool, and side cords wrapped with navy blue wool. These understated details provide a delicate visual rhythm while preserving the kilim’s serene and minimalist character.
Like many nomadic weavings, the kilim was woven in two separate panels and then carefully joined together to achieve the desired width. This traditional construction reflects the practical limitations of the nomadic loom and adds an authentic handmade quality to the piece.
Elegant in its restraint, this Palas kilim demonstrates how Qashqai weavers could create beauty through texture, proportion, and natural color alone, resulting in a textile of timeless sophistication.

This kilim is a “palas”, a type of kilim woven to be used as a basis for domestic activities within the nomadic community (drying vegetables, making cheese, etc.). This vintage kilim was hand-woven by a nomadic or village woman, using her own wool spun and carded by hand.
Turkic-speaking pastoral nomadic tribal groups began entering central and southern Iran during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Qashqai, as a large tribal unit, dates back at least to the early eighteenth century, when some Turkish(Turki)-speaking tribal groups in the region existed under the name Qashqai.
