A remarkably beautiful Qashqai palas kilim whose joyful composition evokes the image of a spring meadow in full bloom. Against a flatwoven background combining natural white cotton and undyed ivory wool, the weaver has scattered a multitude of small, colourful flowers across the field. Arranged in an apparently spontaneous and random manner, these floral motifs create a lively and organic composition that captures the vitality of nature.
Interspersed among the flowers are occasional trees, rendered in a simple and stylized form, together with a handful of other small motifs. Their asymmetrical placement enhances the kilim’s informal charm and reflects the creative freedom characteristic of tribal weaving traditions.
The kilim is bordered on only two sides. This border is divided into a series of simple compartments, each containing variations of the same floral motifs found in the main field. This kilim has some minor staining.
The construction of the piece is equally interesting. To create the wide kilim she needed, the weaver worked on a relatively small loom, weaving two separate panels which were subsequently joined together. This traditional solution provides a fascinating insight into the practical realities of nomadic and tribal textile production.

Turkic-speaking pastoral nomadic tribal groups began entering central and southern Iran during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Qashqai, as a large tribal unit, dates back at least to the early eighteenth century, when some Turkish(Turki)-speaking tribal groups in the region existed under the name Qashqai.
Qashqai kilims are best known for their boldness and freedom in the way the pattern is drawn. An aesthetically pleasing geometry, the fineness of their wool and their clear, strong colours combine to ensure their reputation as superlative examples.
