A small vintage Baluch dasterkhan kilim from Afghanistan, traditionally used by the Baluch tribe as a floor covering for serving and sharing meals.
This piece is framed by a dark wool border that defines and contains the interior field. Unusually for a dasterkhan, the background is highly decorated; while these textiles typically alternate between plain and decorated bands, here the entire field is richly filled with ornamentation. Small goat herds appear within the design, adding a distinctive tribal narrative element. The weaver has also introduced subtle knotted areas, a charming and characteristic feature of traditional Baluch weaving.
This short runner would be ideal for a kitchen, beside a bed, or in a narrow corridor.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool
Size: 155×64 cms
Origin: Baluch tribe, Afghanistan
Date of weaving: 1970
The dinning sofreh, also called Dasterkhan or Dastarkhan, is somewhat similar to the dinning table used in the West. Just as a dinning table can be of various sizes, so a dining dasterkhan can come in different sizes. The dimensions of the dasterkhan depends on the number of members in a family and the prosperity of the owner. However, no matter wether the sofreh is large or small, it is always rectangular, long an narrow.
