Bright & Cheerful Vintage Qashqai Kilim
A vibrant and uplifting vintage Qashqai kilim featuring a rich, saturated colour palette built around the primary colours—red, yellow, and blue—beautifully contrasted with ivory undyed wool for a striking and dramatic effect.
What truly sets this kilim apart is the bold use of opposing colours, such as the blue and the white, placed diagonally in opposite corners (spandrels), creating a dynamic sense of balance and visual tension. The large central medallion and the four spandrels are more reminiscent of Qashqai gabbeh rugs than traditional kilims.
The openness of the main field and the generous scale of the motifs provide a strong contrast to the intricate, finely detailed multiple borders. A powerful and refined kilim.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool
Size: 209x 135 cms
Origin: Qashqai tribe, Iran
Date of weaving: 1980s
Turkic-speaking pastoral nomadic tribal groups began entering central and southern Iran during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Qashqai, as a large tribal unit, dates back at least to the early eighteenth century, when some Turkish(Turki)-speaking tribal groups in the region existed under the name Qashqai.
Qashqai kilims are best known for their boldness and freedom in the way the pattern is drawn. An aesthetically pleasing geometry, the fineness of their wool and their clear, strong colours combine to ensure their reputation as superlative examples.
