Woven Stories of Love and Home: Discover dowry rugs

Publicado el 9 de February de 2026

This Valentine’s Day, we celebrate love, care, and tradition woven into every dowry rug.

For centuries, kilims, rugs, and other woven textiles have been central to a young woman’s life and her family’s prospects. Her weaving provided not only a source of wealth for her husband and his family, but also “furnished” her new home with practical and meaningful objects.

Mastering the art of weaving was essential. A young bride, guided by her mother and female relatives, produced an array of items: floor rugs, kilims, saddlebags, salt bags, and prayer rugs, carefully crafted to outfit her future home. Some were inscribed with the names or initials of the bride and groom, and sometimes a date, possibly marking the wedding itself. Every piece reflected pride, care, and devotion.

Just as when we move into a new home we need a sofa, a kitchen worktop, or a wardrobe, a newlywed couple needed the essentials to live and celebrate together. This included a rug to sit on, a kilim used for making bread called a sofreh, pillows or balisht, saddlebags that could serve both as pillows and storage, and larger bags for transporting goods. Every item was designed to furnish and shape the couple’s new home, combining practicality with tradition and beauty.

Each textile combined family traditions, tribal identity, symbols of luck and fertility, and the bride’s personal creativity, crafted within a structured framework that allowed skill and imagination to flourish. Over generations, these traditions ensured continuity of design while celebrating the individuality of each weaver.

Dowry textiles were more than decoration: they were woven with care and love to furnish a home, build a family, and accompany a life well-lived.
