A fun, characterful vintage Qashqai kilim featuring two vertical rows of the Qashqai emblem, woven in a spontaneous and graceful manner. The design is full of unevenness and movement, with motifs appearing in slightly different shapes and sizes, and colors arranged in a seemingly random yet harmonious way.
The kilim has a deep red main field enriched with beautiful abrash, showing subtle and charming color variations throughout the red tones.
The main border is set against an undyed wool background, decorated with very simple, geometric motifs. In contrast, the secondary borders are more traditional and intricate, creating an unusual and visually engaging balance between simplicity and detail.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool
Size: 215×148 cms
Origin: Qashqai tribe, Iran
Date of weaving: 1970s
Turkic-speaking pastoral nomadic tribal groups began entering central and southern Iran during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Qashqai, as a large tribal unit, dates back at least to the early eighteenth century, when some Turkish(Turki)-speaking tribal groups in the region existed under the name Qashqai.
Qashqai kilims are best known for their boldness and freedom in the way the pattern is drawn. An aesthetically pleasing geometry, the fineness of their wool and their clear, strong colours combine to ensure their reputation as superlative examples.
