Funky Vintage Qashqai Kilim from Iran
Looking for a brightly coloured kilim with vibrant fuchsias, blues, and greys to lift your space? The central field of this joyful kilim features traditional Qashqai motifs, enriched by subtle abrash—gentle colour variations within the same tones—and smaller secondary motifs filling the remaining spaces. While the overall design follows a degree of symmetry, the colours are arranged in a playful, seemingly random manner.
The field is framed by a more formal and symmetrical border, which nevertheless continues the same lively colour palette as the main field.
There is some minor colour run in small areas of the kilim, consistent with its vintage character.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool
Size: 240×165 cms
Origin: Qashqai tribe, Iran
Date of weaving: 1970s
Turkic-speaking pastoral nomadic tribal groups began entering central and southern Iran during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Qashqai, as a large tribal unit, dates back at least to the early eighteenth century, when some Turkish(Turki)-speaking tribal groups in the region existed under the name Qashqai.
Qashqai kilims are best known for their boldness and freedom in the way the pattern is drawn. An aesthetically pleasing geometry, the fineness of their wool and their clear, strong colours combine to ensure their reputation as superlative examples.
