A charming Qashqai kilim with a lively, colorful design.
The most striking feature of this kilim is its main field, divided into a lattice of lozenges. Some of the lozenges are decorated, while the outer ones are left empty, creating a beautiful contrast. The irregular shapes, random colours, and asymmetry add movement and life to this delightful piece. It is unusual to find such abundant green and light blue tones in Qashqai kilims.
The border, carefully organised and symmetrical, frames the main field and provides a pleasing balance between the free-flowing central design and the neat outer borders.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool
Size: 240×150 cms
Origin: Qashqai tribe, Iran
Date of weaving: 1960s
Turkic-speaking pastoral nomadic tribal groups began entering central and southern Iran during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Qashqai, as a large tribal unit, dates back at least to the early eighteenth century, when some Turkish(Turki)-speaking tribal groups in the region existed under the name Qashqai.
Qashqai kilims are best known for their boldness and freedom in the way the pattern is drawn. An aesthetically pleasing geometry, the fineness of their wool and their clear, strong colours combine to ensure their reputation as superlative examples.
The weaving is very fine, and the kilim shows some minor repairs consistent with its age.
