Semi-Antique Qashqai Kilim with Horizontal Design and Natural Dyes (c. 1940s)
This semi-antique Qashqai kilim, woven around the 1940s, features a horizontal layout made up of bands of varying widths. Within these bands, the weaver incorporated a variety of traditional motifs — most notably the “comb” motif, often seen as a symbol of purity.
The main field displays a sense of freedom and improvisation, with subtle colour shifts and spontaneous motifs that give the piece a lively, expressive character. In contrast, the multiple borders appear more structured and balanced — though a closer look reveals delightful “perfect imperfections”, especially in the Lale Abbasi border in navy blue and white.
This kilim is dyed entirely with natural dyes, adding richness and depth to its colour palette while reflecting the authenticity of Qashqai weaving traditions.
A unique and characterful piece, blending artistry, symbolism, and the charm of handmade imperfection.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool
Size: 247×161 cms
Origin: Qashqai tribe, Iran
Date of weaving: 1940s
Turkic-speaking pastoral nomadic tribal groups began entering central and southern Iran during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Qashqai, as a large tribal unit, dates back at least to the early eighteenth century, when some Turkish(Turki)-speaking tribal groups in the region existed under the name Qashqai.
Qashqai kilims are best known for their boldness and freedom in the way the pattern is drawn. An aesthetically pleasing geometry, the fineness of their wool and their clear, strong colours combine to ensure their reputation as superlative examples.
