Charming 1960s Qashqai Kilim with Red Field and Medallions
This lovely 1960s Qashqai kilim features a striking red field adorned with three large medallions, surrounded by an array of smaller motifs. The rich red ground is enhanced by a beautiful abrash—natural color variations within the same tone—that adds depth and movement to the composition, making the medallions appear to float against the background.
The palette is warm and inviting, while the finely spun wool allows for intricate, detailed motifs that highlight the craftsmanship of the weaver. A refined and elegant piece, this kilim perfectly balances bold design with delicate execution.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool
Size: 267×159 cms
Origin: Qashqai tribe, Iran
Date of weaving: 1960s
Turkic-speaking pastoral nomadic tribal groups began entering central and southern Iran during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Qashqai, as a large tribal unit, dates back at least to the early eighteenth century, when some Turkish(Turki)-speaking tribal groups in the region existed under the name Qashqai.
Qashqai kilims are best known for their boldness and freedom in the way the pattern is drawn. An aesthetically pleasing geometry, the fineness of their wool and their clear, strong colours combine to ensure their reputation as superlative examples.
