Bold Palas Kilim with Striking Vertical Stripes
This unique palas-type kilim stands out for its bold, wide vertical stripes—an uncommon feature in flat weaves. Traditionally, flatwoven kilims use the weft to create horizontal designs, but in this piece, it’s the warp that carries the pattern, resulting in striking vertical bands. (Note the colorful fringes that reveal this weaving method.)
At the bottom, the Qashqai weaver added an intricate plait from which the fringes emerge—a beautiful detail that speaks to the weaver’s skill. Due to the limitations of her narrow loom, she wove two long panels and joined them together to achieve the desired width.
With its strong graphic presence, this kilim makes a bold statement in any interior—perfect for those who appreciate both tradition and design impact.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool
Size: 190×147 cms
Origin: Qashqai tribe, Iran
Date of weaving: 1980s
Turkic-speaking pastoral nomadic tribal groups began entering central and southern Iran during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Qashqai, as a large tribal unit, dates back at least to the early eighteenth century, when some Turkish(Turki)-speaking tribal groups in the region existed under the name Qashqai.
Qashqai kilims are best known for their boldness and freedom in the way the pattern is drawn. An aesthetically pleasing geometry, the fineness of their wool and their clear, strong colours combine to ensure their reputation as superlative examples.
